At around 2:30am on Sunday morning, the 20-foot Grady-White motorboat, carrying five friends, smashed into a 35-foot water taxi, which held four people. The motorboat was on its way west when it collided with the north-bound water taxi. The water taxi is operated by Fire Island Water Taxi. No charges have been filed and a US Coast Guard and Suffolk police investigation is ongoing.
Three of the men on the Grady-White were injured. Anastasio Voudouris, 36, and Paul Lapera, 37, were flown to Stony Brook University Medical Center for their neck and back injuries. Kevin Diaz, 35, was moved to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore to tend to his foot injury.
According to his father, Anastasio Voudouris was released from the hospital within a day. He is now home and recovering. Mr. Voudouris owned the Grady-White and was the captain of the now "destroyed" boat.
Two other passengers on the boat walked away without serious injury. The same luckily went for the two passengers and two crew members on the water taxi.
It was not that long ago when passengers aboard the Staten Island Ferry suffered tragedy when it slammed into the pier while docking causing catastrophic injuries for some and loss of life for others.
