Organ transplants are a medical advancement that has saved countless lives. For people on an organ transplant list, waiting to receive a heart, kidney, lung, etc. can be one of the most anxious periods in one's life. After all, successfully receiving an organ often means life itself.
But even after an organ becomes available, there are still risks involved in the procedure, and even after the procedure, in post-op care. Despite these inherent risks, patients almost always opt for the chance at a healthy life rather than the certainty of death.
However, patients would not undergo the risky transplant procedure if they knew they were receiving an organ that may be worse then their own. That is what happened to a father of three in Queens, New York. After being on a transplant list for only eight months, the man was given a new heart. The problem was that the heart was actually diseased. In under a week the man suffered great pain and agony as his new heart hemorrhaged causing his death.
The man’s family is stricken with sadness and left wondering why the hospital would implant a diseased heart. Especially when the man could have survived for years waiting for a proper heart. The family has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to get some answers. So far, the hospital has failed to demonstrate that the did any of the required tests on the heart before implanting it into the victim.
