When You Call Your Lawyers Office Do You Get a Live Receptionist or Voice Mail?

 

A: What type of impression do you immediately get when calling?

Do they put you through immediately to speak to the attorney or do you have to schedule a phone consultation?

If they put you through immediately, what goes through your mind about the attorney's availability and his ability to work with new and existing clients? Is he not busy that he can immediately pick up the phone and speak to you? Or are you happy and relieved that you can speak to someone immediately, regardless of which attorney answers your call?

If his secretary immediately puts you through, what does that mean for the next new potential client calls who wants to immediately speak to the attorney to help solve their legal problem?

When you have a pressing legal need, you obviously want answers immediately. However, pay attention to the lawyer who is immediately available to answer your question at the drop of a hat.

It's always nice to feel good knowing how important you are when you call and someone drops everything you're doing just to answer your questions.

However, there are two concerns you should have if that happens.

First, how busy is the attorney really?
Second, what will happen the next time a new potential client calls while the attorney is working on your particular matter?

Now don't get me wrong, we all get busy and we all love to feel important. Those are two very important facts.

However, over the course of my career, I have found the better practice for me and the new caller is to schedule a phone consultation so that I can devote the appropriate amount of time specifically to your questions and concerns.

This way I have set aside dedicated time where I am not working on someone else's matter, and can focus solely on the issues in your particular case.

Your questions and legal problems are very important. However, did you know that I no longer answer the phone? Ever. It's extremely disruptive to the work I'm doing on existing client matters. But do not fret if you need to speak to me.

Why do I tell you this? I tell you this because I answer legal questions like yours every single day. Chances are you have questions and concerns about an accident, wrongful death matter or medical malpractice matter. By the way, when you call my office, my secretary always answers except after she has left for the day. If you call after she leaves, I have a live receptionist answer the phone and take your important message- which I always get by the way. My secretary promises to return your call the next business morning.
