An accident in New Brighton, Staten Island has left one dead and one injured this Monday afternoon.
An 85-year-old woman was driving Kathryn Brown, 63, in the passenger seat of her beige Ford Focus. Ms. Brown was taken to Richmond University Medical Center and was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. The 85-year-old driver was also brought to the same hospital, and was in serious but stable condition.
Officials are investigating whether the driver had lost control of her vehicle after swerving out of the way of a bicyclist. Whatever the motive, after she lost control of the car, she rammed into two parked cars and then hit a tree, causing the car to overturn on its hood. The street was cordoned off by police. The two women in the car were unconscious when emergency personnel arrived. They used the "Jaws of Life" -- a mechanical claw that cuts through metal -- to open the top of the car to get to the women.
No one was in the parked vehicles, although the entire front of one of the cars was demolished. Who caused the accident and how did the injuries occur? It's unclear from the report specifically how this happened, but I can tell you that someone will be pointing a finger and arguing that the driver was careless and the accident could have, and should have been preventable.
