A terrible accident involving a van of Amish farmers in upstate New York left five dead and 10 injured earlier this week.
On Tuesday, July 19, at 12:40pm, about 40 miles southeast of Rochester in the Finger Lakes region, a car attempted passing a farm tractor along a curved rode that was a no-passing zone with a recommended speed limit of 45 mph, rather than the normal 55 mph.
As the car made its turn to pass, it side-swiped an oncoming van, carrying 14 people -- 13 adult Amish farmers and a non-Amish driver. In the ensuing ricochet, the van became "entangled" in and came to a stop underneath the tractor.
Five passengers in the van died immediately, including a married couple. 10 others, including the driver of the tractor, were injured and taken to a hospital -- some with serious injuries. The driver of the alleged transgressive car was hurt but did not suffer terrible injuries.
The local sheriff claimed this was one of the worst accidents he had ever seen. The crash placed a significant strain on emergency services: "Four helicopters, several fire departments, and about a dozen ambulance services were called to the scene." They were able to successfully cut the van open in order to get the passengers out.
The Amish group of farmers was on its way to learn the farming techniques of other farmers.
