Patient wins award for sponge left in body BROOKLYN, N.Y., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A livery driver in Brooklyn, N.Y., won a $400,000 jury award because a surgeon had left a sponge in his body after an appendectomy. Youcef Saou's malpractice suit was against the Lutheran Medical Center and the surgeon, the New York Post reported. The jury found both the hospital and the surgeon to have been negligent, the report said. Attorney Amy Insler said it took a CAT-scan to find out that an 18-inch surgical sponge -- rolled into a 2-inch ball -- was the reason for her client's severe abdominal pain. A hospital spokesman did not return calls for comment, the Post reported.
