A Brooklyn medical center has been cited by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for 14 health violations of workplace safety and health standards, which come out to $48,000 in fines.
Brooklyn's Interfaith Medical Center had mostly violated standards relating to asbestos, which can be particularly dangerous during demolition and remodeling, which tends to kick up the toxic material. Asbestos dust may cause mesothelioma, which is an incurable cancer that lines the lung. 3000 people in the US are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year and it takes about 20 to 50 years for symptoms to begin. Asbestos dust may also cause asbestosis, which is a terrible scarring of the lung that affects breathing. Finally, it may cause other lung cancer.
The director of OSHA's NY area emphasized the importance of educating and training employees at risk of these dangers. The administrator of the regional OSHA advocated an illness and injury prevention program that focuses on workplace hazards.
The Interfaith Medical Center was cited for 10 serious violations, encountering $44,000 in fines, and was cited for 4 other-than-serious violations, adding $4000 more to the bill. Serious violations refer to a "substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard." Other-than-serious refers to "a direct relationship to job safety and health, but probably would not cause death or serious physical harm." The Center has 15 days to comply or contest OSHA's findings.
