Cook County commissioners have approved a $35 million settlement for a woman who was severely brain-damaged while being treated at a county hospital. The settlement approved Wednesday will be paid over three years to the family of Neveen Morkos, a 30-year-old mother of two who suffered the brain damage in May 2004 while in surgery at Oak Forest Hospital. The Tinley Park woman's family filed a lawsuit that claimed Morkos went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains and was misdiagnosed with appendicitis before being sent for emergency surgery. The suit said an anesthesiologist improperly inserted a breathing tube during the surgery and Morkos went more than 10 minutes without oxygen. Last month, the county approved a $12 million settlement with the family of a Chicago woman whose family also claimed she was permanently brain damaged after an anesthesiologist at Stroger Hospital erred while inserting a breathing tube before the woman's back surgery.
