Court Upholds Award to Mother in Insemination Mistake (03/09/06 - WILMINGTON) - The state Court of Appeals has upheld a $435,000 jury award to a woman who was artificially inseminated with leftover, unprepared sperm. The procedure left Kelly Chambliss violently ill. She filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against Women's Health Specialties North in Wilmington, operated by Coastal A-H-E-C, and nurse practitioner Julie Ramsey. A lawyer for the clinic and the health care provider say they plan to appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court. Chambliss had been treated at the clinic in August 2002 as she made her 12th attempt to become pregnant. Ramsey inseminated her with the contents of an unlabeled syringe. The syringe contained unprepared sperm left over from another client's procedure two days earlier.
