Ex-Cowboys Player Dead after 2007 Post-Surgery Coma

Posted on May 14, 2011

Retired Dallas Cowboys running back, Ron Springs, passed away, May 12, 2011, at the age of 54. His family has been involved in a malpractice suit on his behalf since 2008, after Springs sustained brain damage after surgery at Medical City Dallas Hospital.

The suit was filed by Springs's wife, Adriane, against two doctors who were removing a cyst from Springs's forearm in October of 2007. Mr. Springs had been in a coma ever since the operation and died Thursday, never having regained consciousness.

The lawsuit is limited by local tort law, which caps wrongful death damages at $1.7 million, including a standard non-economic damages cap at $250,000. This is in addition to prior medical expenses.

The family's attorney, Les Weisbrod, reported that his body was with the Dallas County Medical Examiner and that they would not release any further statements until all work was done at the Examiner's office.

Ron Springs had dealt with medical complications in the past. He suffered through diabetes and had his right foot amputated in 2005. Everson Walls, a former teammate, could not bear his friend's suffering and gave Springs his own kidney eight months before the fateful operation.

The frustration in Wall's statement was palpable: "Any emotions I have is because of the sadness his family is feeling right now…To me they were the ones who would have liked to talk to him more than anybody. That cuts really deep."

In New York, there are no caps on the amount of damages one can recover, unlike in Texas.
