A bus and tractor-trailer collided in Waterloo, New York, at the northern end of the Finger Lakes region, after midnight on Friday. The crash caused an explosion, killing the truck's driver and injuring 30 bus passengers.
The bus was travelling from Ontario to New York City, when it pulled over due to an indication from the emissions malfunction light. While the bus waited for the situation to amend itself, officers investigated and left around 1:00 am. Around 1:30 am, the bus was ready to go. As it entered the highway, the tractor-trailer struck from behind, despite the bus' emergency flashers.
Both vehicles immediately burst into flames. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Timothy Hume, 59, died. His company and his home state's -- Michigan's -- State Department praised his safety record. 30 of 52 passengers -- 15-72 years old -- were injured. Seven of the injured were rushed to a hospital. Three have thus far been released, one is in satisfactory condition, two are still being evaluated, and one has been moved to another facility.
One of the people who helped the victims was an Army Sergeant, who had been placed on leave earlier at midnight. When he noticed the collision, he pulled over and ran in to help the passengers out of the burning vehicle.
