A car crash in Harlem at noon on Thursday killed an 89-year-old woman and injured 2 others on one of the most dangerous corners in New York City. Two drivers collided at the intersection of 145th Street and Seventh Ave. in Manhattan. Both drivers claimed they had the right of way.
A Lincoln Town Car was making its way north on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd while a Toyota pickup truck was moving south. As the Lincoln took a left on 145th St., the Toyota rammed into it and subsequently crashed onto the sidewalk, into pedestrians.
Leonia White, a wheelchair-bound woman, 89, was pronounced deadl. Two others escaped with non-life threatening injuries and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital.
Residents complained about the corner's history of accidents as a "death trap." One woman claimed, "Every day there's an accident here." A Department of Transportation Manhattan official recently reported the corner to be in the 90th percentile of dangerous city streets. Much of the reason has to do with the fact that over 50% of tracked vehicles speed on the corner, even during rush hour.
This episode is yet another cause for advocates, like a group called Transportation Alternatives, to fight for the rights of passerby's and pedestrians. The need to protect ourselves from careless and negligent drivers is of critical importance. Pedestrian deaths kill more residents than does gun violence in New York.
