Jury awards $7.1M in malpractice case BELLEVILLE, Ill., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- The parents of a boy who developed cerebral palsy after being discharged from an Illinois hospital have won a $7.1 million malpractice verdict. Two days after Brandon Bauer was born in Dec. 4, 1998, he was discharged from the Memorial Hospital in Belleville, along with his mother. Attorney Rex Carr said the discharge was premature and that doctors had failed to recognize the infant was suffering from hypoglycemia. Memorial Hospital President Henry Maier said the verdict would be appealed, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The case was the first to be tried in St. Clair County since Illinois adopted a law limiting jury awards for non-economic damages but the law did not apply to this case because the malpractice took place before the law was enacted. The jury awarded Amy Brauer and her husband, Scott, $3 million in non-economic damages. Carr said Brandon, now 7, will require lifetime care.
