Jury awards family $7.5 million in boy's death February 19, 2006 (WAUKEGAN, Ill.) - A Lake County jury has awarded a seven-and-a-half-(m)-million-dollar malpractice verdict to the family of a 12-year-old boy who died during a surgery to repair a wrist tendon. Andrew Muno, a seventh-grader at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, died during surgery at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in 1999. An attorney for the family says he died because of an allergic reaction to medication that caused severe respiratory arrest. Doctors were trying to repair a severed wrist tendon on the boys left arm, a cut that occurred when he fell and broke a glass at home. On Friday, the jury sided with the familys claim that the surgeon and anesthesiologist were at fault because they didn't stop the surgery when it was clear the boy was having breathing problems.
