Jury awards $2.6 million in suit stemming from traffic crash Wednesday, September 28, 2005 By DAVID FERRARA Staff Reporter BAY MINETTE -- Defense attorneys are considering whether to appeal one of Baldwin County civil court's richest verdicts of the year -- a total of more than $2.6 million -- which came down shortly after both sides tried to settle the case for half as much. The lawsuit centered on a December 2003 crash in Loxley that left a mother, Cathy DeBell of Foley, and her daughter, Rachel Baker of Bay Minette, injured as they returned home from Baker's chemotherapy treatment in Birmingham. The attorney for the plaintiffs, Andrew Citrin, said Charles Tiemann was drunk and driving an Alabama Rural Electric Association truck when he slammed into the back of DeBell's Jeep Cherokee, which was propelled into the rear of an 18-wheeler. DeBell was driving the sport utility vehicle and her daughter suffered more serious in juries, Citrin said.
