Missippi Jury Awards $1.7M In Wrongful Death Case

Warren Jury Awards $1.7M In Wrongful Death Case VICKSBURG, Miss. -- A Warren County jury has awarded $1.71 million to the family of a Vicksburg woman who died after childbirth in 2001. The jury found that River Region Medical Corporation, the parent company of ParkView Regional Medical Center, was negligent in the death of Jennifer Nelson Nettles. The lawsuit was brought by Nettles' two children and her husband. Testimony at the trial was that an artery was cut while Nettles was undergoing childbirth and tying of her fallopian tubes. Nettles bled to death in a hospital room about six hours later. The plaintiffs argued the hospital was negligent in her death because staff should have checked her blood pressure more often and should have detected the cut artery before Nettles died of it. The hospital contended the procedures of childbirth and tube-tying were uneventful and an artery cut such as the one from which Nettles died is a known complication of the surgery that was performed. The hospital hasn't said whether it will appeal the decision.
