Montgomery County, Illinois, Jury Awards $1-Million In School Bus Student Death HILLSBORO, Ill. (AP) -- A Montgomery County jury has awarded one million dollars to the family of a 14-year-old girl who died from injuries suffered in a school bus crash. The bus plunged down an embankment in August of 2003, injuring all 15 students aboard and the driver. Seventh-grader Shawna Ward of Fillmore died two days later at a hospital in Springfield. The girl's mother sued the Vandalia Community School District and bus driver Eugene Rogers for negligence and wrongful death. A jury awarded the mother just over a million dollars yesterday. (Vandalia is about 65 miles northeast of St. Louis.)
