Motorcycle Accidents in New York; Improve Safety

Posted on Jun 23, 2011

The use of motorcycles in New York State has grown substantially in recent years. This Tuesday, June 21, state officials met in Colonie, NY, to discuss best practices for motorcycle safety.

Over the past decade, New York has increased its motorcycle licenses 28% and registered motorcycles by 76%. Today, there are over 655,000 licensed riders in New York. Last year, 182 motorcyclists died in the state. According to the Times Union, riders are more at risk of death than car drivers by a factor of 37 to 1. Eight motorcyclists have died in just eight days recently, between June 6 and June 14.

At the Colonie event, experts and officials spoke of safety practices for the growing number of state riders.

The manager of the state Motorcycle Safety Program spoke of using educational programs, always wearing protective gear, and never driving while intoxicated. Drivers, he said, should also be cautious. They must keep focus, reserve some room for motorcycles, and be careful when discarding trash through the window.

A state police officer, who rides a motorcycle approximately 10,000 miles each summer, spoke of wearing bright, neon-colored jackets and vests, which easily capture others' attention. He also discussed various helmets and light arrays that make the rider more visible to surrounding traffic.

The president of the American Motorcyclist Association's local district weighed in on the clumsy maneuverability of motorcycles. He says that cars sometimes cut motorcycles off without realizing the dangers, so he tends to ride defensively.

The executive deputy commissioner for the state Department of Transportation also spoke of the dangers of distracted driving and highlighted the caution needed when travelling the bumpy roads near work zones.

The the riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous when compared to driving a car. Motorcyclists are less visible, and fully exposed. Among different factors that account for motorcycle accidents, they include driver inexperience, high-speed and weather.
