Nassau County Police Ambulance & Minivan Collide: 13 Injured

Posted on Jul 12, 2011

An accident this Sunday evening on Long Island, involving an ambulance and minivan, injured 13, none with serious injuries.

The crash occurred at 7pm in East Meadow on July 10. According to a witness, the Nassau County police ambulance was moving west, with its siren blaring. The red minivan was on its way east in the opposite direction, when it turned left. The ambulance then rammed into the side of the minivan.

After police arrived, neither they, not the ambulance driver, nor his partner, were able to help open the minivan's doors. Instead, the local Fire Department arrived and they were able to take the minivan's doors off with a saw.

Community ambulances arrived from Uniondale, Wantagh, Levittown and North Bellmore. In all, 13 people were sent to Nassau University Medical Center, whose spokesman counted 10 adult and 3 child arrivals, including a medic from the ambulance. Police would not comment whether there was a patient in the ambulance. One person was treated at the scene, and no one suffered anything more than "non-serious" injuries. Most were expected to be treated at the hospital and released quickly.
