New York Bus Crash Points to Tire Blowout

Posted on Jul 21, 2011

A tour bus crashed this weekend in upstate New York, killing 2 and leaving 35 injured. The cause is thought to be a blown out tire.

The bus, owned by Bedore Tours, was on its way to Niagara Falls from Washington, DC. The crash occurred on Sunday, July 17, when the driver lost control and veered into the wooded area, landing on its side. The location is 55 miles south of Rochester.

Only the driver had a seatbelt, as per normal tour bus specifications. The driver was eventually sent to the hospital. Immediately after the crash, seven highly injured survivors were taken to a Rochester hospital. Twenty remained hospitalized as of Monday. The two deceased passengers were nationals of India, 52 and 66 years old.

The driver had a clean record and exhibited no indication of intoxication, fatigue, or excess speed.

Instead, the ongoing investigation is looking into a blown out front tire, based on road markings and witnesses describing a loud bang before the driver lost control. However, the front tires are alleged to have been new, the bus was relatively new, and a 2010 federal inspection had given Bedore Tours a "satisfactory" safety rating. 12 of 19 fleet buses were inspected.
