NEW YORK CITY PAYS $155M IN HOSP SUITS By CARL CAMPANILE December 12, 2006 -- The city paid $155 million last year to settle 304 medical malpractice cases against public hospitals - an $11 million increase from the previous year, The Post has learned. Eight of the top 10 cases concerned alleged botched deliveries that left babies mentally impaired or disabled, records show. One lawsuit over a brain-damaged infant at North Central Bronx Hospital was settled for $8.5 million. The average payout was $509,868 per case. "We attribute this increase to the more aggressive and efficient claims-management efforts and a very conscious approach to closing long-standing cases," said Health and Hospitals Corp. spokeswoman Ana Marengo.
