Suffolk Grants $9.6M for Brain-Injury Building Expansion
The Long Island Head Injury Association has been approved by Suffolk County for $9.6M to expand to a new facility in Hauppauge.
LI Head Injury Association is a not-for profit that assists brain-injured patients, who would otherwise be in nursing homes, with health planning, recreational activities, and everyday activities. The group began in North Carolina in 1988 when two families met to engage their brain-injured sons. They now take survivors of car accidents, gun shots to the head, and drownings. It is the largest association of its kind in New York.
On Thursday, the Suffolk County Economic Development Corp. granted the group a preliminary approval for $9.6 million in tax-exempt bond financing. $4 million will renovate the new building, $2 million will purchase new equipment, and $3.4 will pay off debt.
The new building, a 50,000-sq-ft complex, was bought last year for $5.7 million. According to Newsday, the group operates out of at least 12 smaller locations, serving at least 47 people. Three locations are scheduled to be renovated and they are looking to expand to three other smaller homes in the near future. Currently, the association employs 150 people and the new building is expected to create 20 jobs.
