A house tragically exploded this week in upstate New York, claiming 5 lives and 6 injuries.
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, a two-story house in Salem, NY -- 40 miles northeast of Albany -- exploded, sending debris flying up to 100 yards away and cinderblocks up to 50 yards away.
Eleven people were caught inside. Five have died, while the others were sent for medical treatment. The house was being rented out by Tammy Palmer, 41, who died in the blast. Her son and his visiting girlfriend had also died. Her husband's nephew was likewise killed in the explosion. After the incident, a neighbor was able to pull Ms. Palmer's 2-month-old daughter from the wreckage, but she also died by next morning. Six others were sent to hospitals in Albany, Westchester, and Vermont.
Investigators believe the cause of the explosion was a propane leak. The home owners said they were informed of a gaseous smell earlier that morning and that they were on their way to the house when the structure exploded.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are leaning away from ruling negligence or criminal activity, but their case depends on what the owners of the home knew, when they knew it, and whether they acted with reasonable diligence.
