Webster jury awards family $800,000 in medical malpractice claim May 16, 2006 By Vickie Welborn vwelborn@gannett.com MINDEN – A Webster District Court jury Friday awarded $800,000 to a Minden woman and her family after finding that Meadowview Health and Rehabilitation Center committed medical malpractice and violated the woman’s right to dignity. The jury awarded $400,000 on the medical malpractice claim and $400,000 under the Louisiana Nursing Home Resident’s Bill of Rights claim. After costs and fees are assessed, the verdict could near $1 million. Odessa Washington, who is in her late 80s, suffered a large pressure sore on her right hip and dehydration. She also was allowed to lie in her own waste for extended periods of time. She has since recovered from the injury and is living in a different nursing home. The law firm of Nix, Patterson & Roach LLC represented the Washington family.
