A new study out of Georgetown claims colon cleansing has no positive effects, can be dangerous, and there are plenty of healthier alternatives.
Colon cleansing is an "extreme enema," often utilizing a lot of fluid to cleanse the large intestine. It has become popular in the last couple of decades, and has been embraced by many celebrities for its professed detoxification effects, based on the impression that waste is stored in the colon for years, eventually getting reabsorbed little by little over time.
The Georgetown study could not find any of these purification effects, but did find some negative side effects, including cramping, nausea, possible kidney failure, and electrolyte imbalance. The problem they cited was an excess of water. Just as too many enemas are dangerous, a large amount of water at once during colon cleansing is likewise not ideal. This procedure is especially dangerous for those with, "Crohn's disease and other gastrointestinal problems, diabetes and conditions requiring specific medications."
Researchers made sure to note that the FDA has not approved colon hydrotherapy (using water for the fluid) devices for non-medical reasons. It is approved only as a pre-surgical procedure. Colon cleansing supplements also do not require approval by the FDA. Additionally, colon cleansing professionals, or hydrotherapists, are not necessarily licensed.
Advocates of colon cleansing mostly tout hydrotherapies, as opposed to supplements, and say that licensed practitioners can provide "healthier skin, more energy, a stronger immune system and fewer problems with constipation." They say hydrotherapy removes toxins from the body.
Opponents say humans naturally detoxify the body and certain toxins and bacteria will return after colon cleansing. Instead, they advocate exercise, proper dieting, a good night's rest and more fiber.
