Alcohol is damaging to health in a variety of ways. Cancer Research UK is most concerned about the impact alcohol has on cancer risk.

Researchers from Cancer Research UK have written about the link between alcohol and cancer a number of times, from discussing the evidence that is causes cancer to talking about how drinking less reduces your risk of developing the disease.

Seven types of cancer are linked to alcohol including, bowel, esophageal, larynx, mouth, pharynx, breast, and liver. There is also increasing evidence that heavy drinking might be linked to pancreatic cancer.

According to one Cancer Research UK expert on how alcohol causes cancer, researchers are unsure why alcohol causes some cancers and not others.

However, there are theories.

The best evidence is for mouth and throat cancers where alcoholic drinks directly damage cells in these tissues.

There is also evidence that certain bacteria in your mouth and throat could be involved in alcohol causing cancer. However, the link isn’t clear and researchers aren’t sure and need to wait for more data

Alcohol also increases a person’s chances of developing a scarring of the liver known as cirrhosis, which researchers believe increases the risk of developing liver cancer.

Although there may be a perception that the health risks of alcohol only apply to heavy drinkers, research is revealing that it is not just drinking large amounts of alcohol that increases the risk of developing cancer.

There is still a lot that is unknown, but researchers are beginning to figure out at least one of the ways that it causes harm

The relationship between people and alcohol has existed for years and it is an integral part of many societies’ social lives. Adults have the right to decide how much they want to drink, but the impact it has on the body is undeniable.
