You weren't injured in a car accident.

You didn't suffer injury by a careless and negligent doctor.

You're not sitting in the intensive care unit in a hospital wondering how you got there.

You're not home recuperating from orthopedic surgery after a horrific accident.

Ok, if you weren't in any horrible accident, why would you ever want to learn how car accident cases and medical malpractice cases work here in New York?

The answer?

To be prepared. To know what to do. To know where to turn. To know what your options are if, God-forbid, something bad happens to you. That's why.

If you never suffered injury as a result of a doctor who violated the basic standards of medical care, why would you ever want to read a book explaining how medical malpractice lawsuits work in New York?

Obviously, if you're curious about how these cases work, you can read up and learn how they work. But for most people, you will likely say “I'm not in this situation, I don't need to read up and learn how these types of cases work."

However...

There is a lot to be said about being prepared and knowing what to do if you are in that type of situation.

Let me give you an example...

When you are 65 years old, you don't wake up one morning and say “I guess I will retire today.” You certainly don't say that if you haven't made plans and preparation for your retirement.

In order to plan for your retirement you will likely have needed to set aside a considerable amount of money that you began accumulating when you were in your 20s, 30s and even 40s.

How did you know you need to set aside money when you were younger in order to plan for retirement one day?

The answer is because you learned how important was to do that.

You learned that you can't simply wake up one day in your late 60s and declare that you want to retire without having any available money to do so. You learned about retirement and learned about your options when you were younger. You were prepared.

Let me give you another example that may sound really strange.

Did you know that there are people who prepay for their funerals? Sounds weird, doesn't it? Yet they have already mapped out exactly what will happen when they die. It certainly is a strange topic to talk about, but the reality is that there are many people who want to pre-plan what is going to happen when they die, and that's Ok.

We all know that this event is a certainty, we just don't know when.

These same people would rather have everything planned out and paid for rather than leaving that to surviving family members.

These people spent the time, effort and energy to learn about their options by speaking to different funeral homes and learning what was available before they ever got sick and died.

Here's another example...

Many of us have life insurance.

Why?

In the event we die, our surviving family members will be financially stable when this tragedy occurs. Ok...when did you buy your life insurance policy and how did you know which policy was right for you?

There's a good chance someone told you that you needed to be prepared. Some life insurance agent likely sat down with you and explained what would happen if you were no longer able to support your family. What would your spouse do in your absence? Then the agent explained the different life insurance plans available and what it would cost for each of those different plans.

The time to buy life insurance is obviously when you are still healthy and alive. You can't go searching for a life insurance policy when you are deathly ill or have already died.

What if instead of you being in a bad car crash, a good friend or family member was involved in a terrible accident? They are the ones who are now scrambling to learn what their legal options are.

They were not prepared.

They did not plan ahead.

They never learned of their options.

Now they are scrambling to try and learn what to do in order to obtain compensation for all the harms and losses they have suffered.

How useful would it be if you could hand them a book that you had read describing how these types of accident, medical malpractice cases and wrongful death cases worked here in New York?

How great would it be if you could be a trusted resource to show them a book that you had read that help you understand how these cases work?

Being prepared allows you the opportunity to be a great helpful resource to friends or family members if they should need this type of information. Being a trusted resource is extremely valuable to both friends and family in their time of need. Knowing where to turn or where to get started is often more important than anything else.

No one expects to be in a car accident. Yet we know that there're plenty of careless drivers.

Nobody expects to get medical care and treatment that violates the basic standards of medical care causing harm. Yet this is a statistical fact.

How useful would it be to have a book on your shelf or sitting on your computer that teaches you and educate you about how these types of cases work here in New York?

Remember, if you have already been injured because of someone else's carelessness and now you are looking to see what your options are, you can always obtain this information. But how much more secure would you feel if you learned this information BEFORE some tragedy like this ever occurred?

Wait...I know what you're thinking.

You're thinking “This can't happen to me and I don't need this information and I not going to spend the time to read an interesting and educational book if I don't need it now."

That's the common thinking. However, being prepared is always preferable to not knowing what to do in a crisis situation.

Let me share a quick story with you that will illustrate this exact point...

When I was 14 years old, my father died. My mother believed it was because of careless doctors. At that time, I had no idea what an attorney did. I never heard of the term medical malpractice before. My mom, a housewife, never needed an accident attorney, a personal injury attorney, a medical malpractice attorney or a wrongful death attorney. Nothing like this had ever happened to us before.

Since we had no idea what these types of lawyers did and never had a need for this type of attorney, we had no clue what to do when my dad died.

I later learned that my mom began asking her friends and family members if they knew what to do in this situation. Some did. Most didn't.

Mom was ultimately referred to a well-known personal injury attorney in New York City who was able to answer many of her questions about how this type of case worked.

I can't help but think that if she had had a book years earlier that taught her how these types of cases work, she would have avoided a tremendous amount of anxiety and stress following my dad's untimely death.

To learn about the details of how my dad died and the lawsuit that followed, I invite you to read this fascinating article about what happened.

I also invite you to learn how, 27 years later, I had the opportunity to go up against one of the defense attorneys who represented the cardiologist in my dad's wrongful death lawsuit. Click here to read that wild story.

Why am I sharing this information with you if you don't specifically need this information?

It's because you want to be prepared. You want to plan ahead. Importantly, even if you never have a specific need for this, you want to learn how these types of cases work. You want to become better educated and informed about how the court system works in New York.
