Charleston jury awards $6.5 Million for defamation

Posted on Apr 01, 2006

CHARLESTON (AP) - A former private guardian has been awarded nearly $6.5 million after a jury found that she was defamed. Linda Erickson says members of groups called the Justice Seekers and the Domestic Court Reform movement tried to characterize her as unfit and launched a conspiracy to destroy her. Erickson worked as a guardian ad litem when the groups released a report that was highly critical of the system. The report claimed private guardians, appointed to represent children in family court, took sides in custody disputes. Former Dorchester County Family Court judge Alvin Briggs has filed a similar defamation suit against members of the group.
