Emergency Room Errors
Improperly read x-rays, CAT scans and MRI can have dire consequences. When these mistakes happen in an emergency room, the mistakes can be deadly. Lack of communication between doctors, nurses and technicians have caused countless injuries to patients who come to an emergency room seeking life-saving help.
A failure to diagnose can also result in serious injury. When a doctor is faced with a sick patient in the emergency room they will often create a differential diagnosis to help determine which is the most likely problem that they are suffering from. A "differential" consists of a list that begins with the most likely cause, to all the way down to the least likely cause.
Once a differential diagnosis is formulated, the doctor then orders specific diagnostic and laboratory tests to rule out each particular condition. The failure to formulate a differential diagnosis may in some cases be a departure from good care. The failure to perform specific tests to rule out the most likely conditions may also be a departure from good medical care.
A delay in diagnosis has also played a part in showing a doctor or hospital was responsible for a patient's injuries. Failure to call in a specialist to evaluate a patient can also be a departure from good care.
